Let Us Introduce Michael Green Jr
By Kirven Lang
This time last year, Michael Green Jr was starting his freshman year of college at Faulkner State (now Coastal Alabama-Bay Minette). Lanky kid from Atlanta, Georgia who made his way to little ol’ Bay Minette, Alabama.
Green Jr is a kid that makes you wonder, how did he end up playing junior college basketball in Alabama? He’s from arguably the hottest basketball recruiting hot bed in the south, maybe the country. It’s puzzling sometimes how these players stories unfold.
Former player and assistant coach Kennon Washington invited Green Jr down for a workout. Of course, the workout went well enough for us to sit here and write about it. What’s funny is, the coach that recruited him, was not there for the upcoming season. Alabama JUCO legend Jack Robertson ended up retiring from Faulkner State and handed the reigns over to his son Robert Robertson.
So now you have a 6’4 guard from the hottest basketball recruiting bed, Atlanta, in Bay Minette, Alabama and the coach that recruited him there isn’t even on staff anymore. Seems like things would be very dramatic for Green Jr but instead, it turned out to be the complete opposite. He was the focal point of the offense and averaged slightly under 18 points per game, 4.7 rebounds and 3.3 assist. Impressive numbers for a true frosh who only had two scholarships coming out of high school, Bishop State and Pensacola State.
The path of his junior college recruitment is taking the same path of his high school recruitment. Not many four year schools have been in contact but it should all change here as soon as October when more coaches get a chance to lay their eyes on him. He has an offer from Arkansas-Monticello while Samford and Southern Miss both have expressed interest. With the addition of 6’4 Shyim Cunningham, the Sun Chiefs will have nice sized and skilled backcourt with both being combo guards. Green Jr is more of the skilled, shifty guard who can score from wherever. He’s not overly athletic but he is crafty and scores at all three levels. He is also very unselfish and can find teams while slashing.
It will be interesting to see how things shake up after the October when Coastal Alabama-Bay Minette travels to Juco Report’s C Black JC Jam at Gordon State in Barnesville, Georgia October 15th.
